What to Expect: A Step-by-Step Guide to
Your Breast Reduction Surgery
Breast reduction surgery is a common and highly effective procedure designed to reduce the size and weight of overly large breasts. It is performed by our board-certified plastic surgeons in NYC to provide relief from chronic physical symptoms and create a shape that is more balanced with your body. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia at an accredited surgical facility ensuring you are asleep and comfortable throughout the process.
Before the Surgery
Prior to surgery you will undergo a full evaluation and medical history to ensure optimal outcomes and safety. Photographs will be taken and we will get authorization from insurance company. This may take 3-5 weeks depending on your insurance provider.
Once authorization is obtained our scheduler will help you a surgical date that works well with your life plans Medical is clearance will also need to be obtained prior to surgery.
Day of Surgery
Anesthesia
You will be placed under general anesthesia by a certified anesthesiologist to ensure you are completely pain-free and comfortable during the entire operation.
Incision Planning
Your surgeon will carefully mark the precise incision lines on your breasts. The specific pattern (often referred to as a "keyhole," "lollipop," or "anchor") is determined during your consultation and is chosen to achieve the best reduction, lift, and aesthetic shape while keeping scars as discreet as possible.
Tissue Removal and Reshaping:
Your surgeon will carefully mark the precise incision lines on your breasts. The specific pattern (often referred to as a "keyhole," "lollipop," or "anchor") is determined during your consultation and is chosen to achieve the best reduction, lift, and aesthetic shape while keeping scars as discreet as possible.
Lifting and Repositioning
The remaining breast tissue is sculpted and reshaped to form a smaller, lighter, and more youthful contour. The nipple and areola are then carefully repositioned to a higher, more appropriate position on the newly formed breast mound.
Closing the Incisions
Finally, the incisions are closed using sutures (stitches) deep within the breast tissue to support the new shape, followed by stitches and skin tape and glue on the surface. We utilize meticulous closure techniques to minimize visible scarring.
Bandaging and Discharge
After the surgery is complete, your breasts will be wrapped in surgical dressings and fitted with a special supportive surgical bra. Because this is an outpatient procedure, you will be moved to a recovery area and discharged to go home later the same day.
Total Surgery time 2-4 hours depending on complexity.
